XU Nursing Student’s experience

The recent announcement of the November 2015 Philippine Nursing Licensure exam, led to fame of the few universities in the country, including my Alma Mater bagging 100 percent passing rate with 2 top notchers. Truly, nursing as a profession which brings a great responsibility towards the health care providers, hand in hand a great feeling of fulfillment that care was given to patients in times they call for help.

Having a license to Nurse is a great deal to every nursing student out there. The license we have aimed for, symbolizes the hard work, sacrifices and nights of studying we did just for this profession. Some people may say “being a nursing student is more difficult than being a nurse already”.

One example of which is the experience of this student nurse from my Alma Mater – Xavier University. Last Tuesday, January 26 between 4:30 to 5:00 AM – this second year Nursing Student just experience a traumatic event on the hands of a thief. Her bag was attempted to be abducted from her. She narrated that the she resisted the unknown thief which dragged across few meters. The scuffle led the student nurse wounded with few bruises and teared up duty uniform.

Nursing students from 2nd year to 3rd year is given two duty days per week (16 hours per week). Some of which is assigned on morning shifts which requires them to arrive at the hospital before the call time. On or before 6 AM, every nursing student is expected to be in the hospital already.

The time of which every nursing student starts to travel from their house to their designated hospital (5AM to 6AM) increases their susceptibility to encounter these danger.

Hand in hand, approximately 70-80 percent of the the Nursing population is predominantly women. For 3 years, 2-3 times a week, this routine is practiced by every nursing student.

In those three years, surely every nursing student has a story to tell and this nursing student who had experienced such traumatic event is one of them.

This has an alarming implication towards the College of Nursing administration. As a community of educators – safety of its students is one of its priorities yet in contrary the quality of education should not be jeopardized.

Behind every nursing student out there, has a story to share. Outrageous hospital experiences and most traumatic events just like this. We grow in a perilous yet fulfilling, and humble world.

To everyone: be careful! Be vigilant! Stay safe!

Wrapping up my 2015

Happy Holidays everyone!

This year has been a ride for everyone. Some may say this has been a great year for them, while some it may be on the down side – the opinion lies within each individual. So for this last article for this year, I would love to share my adventure throughout this year. I am going to wrap it up using my words, for this year has been giving me great rides.

Does anybody feel as if it was just like yesterday that 2015 has begun? I could still remember how I packed up some shirts to wear for a mass on the 24th of December. Then 5 minutes before midnight of the 31st , everybody is ready to light their firecrackers as we embrace the year 2015.

2015 was my most busiest, yet productive year ever! I was about to finish my college by the end of March. It was a tough ride – not only for me, but also to my fellow colleagues. All the nights we spent studying for the final exams and all the coffee I drank from four (4) different coffee shops in the city. We have surely burned the midnight oil for us to be able to achieve what we want – to graduate.

Next, graduation was up! We did it! For four (4) long years we made it! It was one of our great achievements that we have survived college. All the hard-work and sacrifices have paid off. On the other hand, it was both a personal goal and relationship goal for me and my girlfriend – Rosenblum Legaspi (search her up! :D). We have been through almost everything in school, from studying, hospital duties, having fun with friends, soccer games, and much other stuff.

Me and my Rosen :)

Next stop this year was our Nursing Licensure Exam. Approximately 2 months after our graduation, I and Rosen gambled to take the board exam earlier. This is unorthodox to what others usually do. To cut the long story short – we made it again! We passed the Licensure Exam – another seemingly a relationship goal again as to what the social media calls it. We were license nurses here in the Philippines and got our ID’s (1) one month after the result has been posted.

The two (2) paragraphs alone make it seems to be easy and smooth but In fact, these paragraphs consists a lot of sacrifices, happy, sad, full of anxiety moments. Moments which when I relinquish in my mind makes me want to pat my back and say “good job Stephen, you did it”.

When the year was about to end, my adolescence stage has slowly faded away as my 21st birthday has arrived. Transition, accomplishments and change sums up my 2015.

Now that 2015 is going to leave us for good soon, may we always remember to thank the people who surround us all year round. The people who have inspire us to do the unthinkable, the people who have made us smile and made us who we are for the next few years ahead.

Retreat to what we have learned from this year and keep eyeing on our goals for the 2016.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE and LET LOVE BE OUR GREATEST AIM!

Better to aim High and miss, than to aim Low and hit

I entered my Alma Mater once again. It has only been 8 months since I have been a fully pledged alumnus and roughly 5 months ago when I became a registered nurse. The school corridors have been the battle ground of every student, and so it was for me.  Every college has its own unique forte and strong points, yet there has been one distinct college which has been raising tarpaulins every year around the city, stacking with photos of nurses who successfully topped the board exam. The success and excellence of this particular college was been made possible through the passion and leadership of this particular lady – known as the “mother” of her own college which she resides currently as the dean.

Dr. Ramona Heidi Palad – Xavier University’s College of Nursing dean

Dr. Ramona Heidi Palad RN, MAEd, MAN, Phd – Xavier University’s Dean of the college of Nursing. Since the establishment of the college in the year 1993, up until the present – she has led the college to what is known as of today as one of the “Best” performing not only in the city but also in the Philippines. On the other hand, she is known to be committed on producing high quality competent nurses, backed up with outstanding records during annual Nursing Licensure Exams – with a superb statistic of 100% passing rate and with at least four topnotchers for the past two consecutive board exams.

Amidst the hectic schedule as a dean, I am very pleased and honored to have a chance to interview her for the first time. I entered a familiar spacious office, and greeted her with a hand shake. A woman with likes of her, who embodies excellence and prestige, has unknowingly had a jubilant aura – thus best exemplifies a “Mother” of her college.

As our conversation continuous, I asked her what might be the challenges/difficulties she had faced to reach the status and popularity this college has become.

“Well first of all, without these challenges we will not achieve what we have today – this serves as our motivation to be better, do more, to be the best and competitive in the market… on the other hand, if the Passion of what you are doing dies, there will never be a motivation to improve and to excel.” She continued. “I have been here in this college for more than a decade, and if I don’t have the passion and love on what I am doing.… I might as well have resigned a long time ago, but I really love teaching, this is my passion…” she added.

In conclusion – she delivered a valuable statement for the upcoming takers for the Nursing Licensure exam this November: “Hard work, Faith, positive thinking and Prayer. You have toiled so hard, and worked so hard for the exam already. Acknowledge God, in whatever we do because He is the source of everything.  Believe and be confident within yourself and the Almighty will surely give what is due to you”.

In connection, the city’s one of its top performing school has been producing quality Nurses from one of its department which we presently known as the Xavier University’s College of Nursing. The leadership, guidance and commitment of Mrs. Ramona Palad led to a remarkable success and milestone of this institution thus best exemplifies the essence of excellence. All the hard work, patience and time had paid off – as the quote goes “no pain, no gain”. We should always remember that everything is difficult before it will become “easy”. We may fall ones, twice, or many times as we assert our efforts to succeed, thus we should challenge ourselves to believe what matters to us the most – to achieve competence.

It seems it has been implanted in the bottom of our heads, to seek greatness, achieve more and never settle for less. “Quality over quantity”, and brilliance rather than mediocrity. Each and every individual has been striving to be on top and hone ones talent! And this idea relevantly played a role on our decisions in life and career, hence we endeavor for perfection – we should strive for excellence.

Each one of us is facing our own personal battle. We have our own dreams and ambitions. Always do your best in everything that you do. We all have experienced few situations where we settle of being “good enough is good enough”.  But we may not often times be the top of everything, but in any case what is essential is that we stay unyielding to be the best and never settle for less. In the end on every task we ask ourselves – “Did I give it my all? Could I have done more?”

Being excellent is not something we have decided one day. If this is the whole point, then everyone in the world decides to be the best. Aiming for fineness needs a lot of work and perseverance. It is not given, nor decided and self proclaimed. It is toiled upon and earned, just like a barren land being cultivated or a dull sword being sharpened. May we always remember that there will never be a shortcut to success and excellence; in the conclusion may we invariably remember to aimed high in everything that we do and constantly challenge ourselves to give more than what is expected of us.

My Goals

I am 21 years old. At this age, i gained my License as a Nurse. I was never been this proud having finished everything at such a young age, I thank God for that. For some, they may say i am still too young, and i am blessed to achieve these things. Yet as philosophy about man goes – “we never get satisfied“. I am a kind of person who tries to take two steps ahead and plans my future step by step. So let me share a list of plans i have been thinking for the years to come, here we go:

PASS NCLEX
I am forever grateful to my brain, for passing the Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam just one month right after i graduated in nursing school. Yep! Fresh graduate, then few months after – fresh Nurse at your service. Off-course life’s stuff here in the Philippines, I have never thought on working for good here – i need to seek for greener pasture. Sad but true – i need to work and battle the real world after battling my grades in nursing school. Nationalism and patriotism should be set aside for now, because i need to be successful in my field. Now, i am currently reviewing for my NCLEX exam, which will take place few months from now. I need to pass it, and hopefully maybe it would be the last time i will use my brain for studying, or would be the last time burning the midnight oil.

MARRY
This might happen earlier than you can ever thought of. I just took this as one of the option recently. A double edge sword to have a Canadian girlfriend. First, it would be of our advantage to work together as a nurse outside the country sooner than anybody here in the Philippines, but secondly on the other side of the sharp edge,  there might be a BIG possibility for her to go to Canada first for few agonizing months, so she can sponsor me. So yeah, this serves as a step stone to our dreams together.

EARN AND SAVE UP MONEY
In God’s will when we have a job and a place to stay, I’m going to save up like hell! I think everybody has this in mind. Well, include me! Saving up money, it will surely procure other dreams i have. Build our dream house, no, no… What i’m going to do first is buy all the cool gadgets in the world! That is what i have been wanting since the dawn of time. And most especially, save a lot to sponsor my family from the Philippines. A bit ambitious huh? But if there’s a will, there’s a way.

BUSINESS
I have been so business minded since i was still in highschool, when we were exposed to entrepreneurship. Building a business is my thing, finding profit on everything is one of the things I love to do. I am looking forward to make a good Restaurant business. Who doesn’t love food? I want to cook, serve and make people’s belly happy. Arrive hungry, Leave happy. Maybe that would be a good tag line for the future business. Copyrights.

STOCK MARKET
Fascinated, yet, knows few about stock market, i know it is the best business in the world. I am planning someday if money is just around my backyard, then i would be entering to stock market. Invest a good deal, and make money even when sleeping. Livin’ like Bill Gates. It is still farfetched off course, but who knows, investing can be a small amount of money for now, being a reasonable risk taker sometimes and do some trial and error. Looking forward to this, because it is the real deal. Tesla on the way!

RETIRE?
Never thought about retiring yet. Maybe i’m too young to think about it for now. Maybe if i turned as an old adult someday then i’ll think of resting and not working anymore. But for now, neh! I’ll stay focus on short term goals.

———————————
That was few? Yes, some say, the more you prepare a lot of stuffs, the more you don’t get finish or achieve something. I will keep my head on the goals – short term goals. Because in the end, the “now” is what matters the most. Taking it easy one at a time, slowly but surely and eyeing on the target and never loosing sight to your goals – that’s how to make yourself a successful person and satisfied person in LIFE.

The types of NURSING STUDENTS

Nursing may be one of the toughest courses in college. Being inclined to a medical related course is no joke, especially when we are about to handle and take good care of LIVES. But behind those seemingly jail bars of the Nursing classrooms and the discipline given by our “school before hoes” clinical instructors, we have encountered different kinds of personality inside the classroom. The personalities that will be described here may be compared to every student on other courses, in lieu, the circumstances will be related to my experiences as i have ventured my Nursing Life throughout the four years of college. So here we go! Here’s for all of us Nursing/Nurses pips!

1.) The facade of saying “I didn’t study” but after the exam, gets the highest score

There are two sub category of this: first are those students who TRUTHFULLY did not study and aced the exam, i bet the trend of their quizzes are “gets a high score when not studying and fails when the topic was studied” what an irony. The second are those known to be The Smarties and Nerds in the class who SECRETLY studied weeks before the exam, and then when asked if they have studied, they’ll just tell you “uhmmm, the topic was really difficult…” Or “i really didn’t study, the topic, it was so confusing” and after the exam *tadaa* gets the highest grade! Then you’ll find yourself telling them – “i thought you didn’t study??!” And they’ll say “i don’t know..” with a smirk, which on the contrary makes me want to smack their asses out!

2.) The Bulimics

You do the research about the condition Bulimia Nervosa. These are the petite, sexy, fit boys and girls on the first years of Nursing who will have there white uniform first be measured by the tailoring services. These little pythons will ask the sewer to make there uniform slim fit. Too fit in a sense that they look like wearing skinny jeans and there upper dress fits snuggly on there curved highschool hips! Thus, they are called the Bulimics because as every year goes by, they get fatter and bigger- for sure! And their uniforms gets smaller and smaller for them, they get more depressed about their size, and the barometer they use to know if they increased in weight are their white uniforms. Food for the brain eh?

3.) All Org, No Nursing type

These are the students who are so inclined with their extracurricular activities. They are so into it that they forget their nursing subjects and quizzes to think of to. These are the students you usually see going from classroom to classroom to announce upcoming activities in school. These are also the students who says “..vote straight , vote alliance..” Don’t get me wrong, i got few good friends who are like this, and i salute them for balancing work between two demanding fields and finished nursing and its hardships for four years. But beware to those nursing students who are this type, just a word of advice: “just stick to studying”. If you were to ask me? I’d choose my future first.

4.) The LGBT’s

These are the lesbians, gays, bisexual, transexual pips of nursing! These are the rainbow among the blacks and whites in the class. Pretty sure we have gay or lesbian classmates especially where Nursing as a course is predominantly women. Some may be late bloomers, who will show their true colors maybe around third, fourth year or maybe they will NEVER tell anybody about their sexuality until such time the crow turns white. (Well albino crows are now possible, i guess) and some LGBT’s have these unique personalities already since the beginning of time and who has no fear of showing who they really are. Let’s just respect who they are and what they want to be. World peace baybeh!

5.) The Iron Man

These are the students who goes to school or goes to duty with a uniform comparable to crumpled paper! They shirts were unpressed, and an imaginary iron is chasing them from behind. Well, this is common to students who are late commers, who goes to school runnin’ to save their asses from extension, and because they are in a hurry, they had no time to iron their shirts. Or maybe they are on a dorm life, flat irons are not allowed in their respective dorms. Beep beep!

6.) The Car pool Driver

In every duty rotation, you are assign to a group composed of 10 to 13 students – this is what we call the duty groups. You go to your hospital together and many other requirement stuffs. The standard of a good duty group, aside from having a genius group-mate, is that one of your duty group-mate should have a car. Ironically, out of 13 students in a group, sometimes, only 5 students are rides that car when used, make it 6 if the clinical instructor hitched hiked. And the others commute, because off course not everyone get along from each other. But if all of you get along really well, then you have a damn good duty group! Having someone having a car in group is so damn convenient. So the next time the duty group assignments are posted, the first question you need to ask is “does anybody have a car?”

7.) The 1st batch Breakers

These are the students who goes to duty, who are always looking forward for the snack break. The break time usually goes around 9am, and these students starts looking for the break sheet around 7am so that they can reserve their name in it to be included in the first break. “I’m stressed, therefore i eat.”

8.) The “ALDUBS” and “Pastillas boys and girls”

These are the nursing couples. These are the couples who are separated for life and becomes close to impossible to be classmates because clinical instructors arranges the block assignment in a way that these couples don’t come together. Bittermelons..

9.) The Coffee shop Scavengers

These are nursing students who spend most of the time studying on coffee shops! Starbucks, Coffee Works, Dave’s beanery, Bo’s Coffee -name it! They are there to study and pump there brains with caffiene. The technique will be – if allowance gets low at the end of the week, buy the smallest and cheapest coffee and study the whole day in that place. Pretty sure they won’t kick you out because you bought something from them. Why do we study out? Because we don’t have time to study in the day, and our clinical instructors sets so unrealistic deadlines and exam schedules. Well, that’s what they call Excellence. Weh?

10.) The Photocopier

These are the nursing students whom their group mates think they will contribute better if they just keep quiet. So instead of being a decoration of the group, he/she is tasked to do errands such us printing and photocopying stuffs. Easy as that! The group uses glucose for their brain, while you have to use it for your voluntary muscles. Well done Leader, nice logic! If Nursing is an online game, where characters is divided into three categories: Strength, Agility, Intelligence type. Everybody is Intelligence type and you are the Agility type. You do the running, we do the thinking. Well good luck by the time your clinical instructor ask questions about your paper.

11.) The Extension collector

Yeah, you got it right! These are the students whom at the end of every semester gets the highest number of extensions. Greater than the number of hours our clinical instructors were paid for. If you’re one of them, then you’re screwed!

12.) The Althetes

Long before our school does not allow nursing students to join the University’s varsity team due to the hectic schedules we have. One more thing, we have duties on Intramurals, local holidays like fiesta or even on our school’s holiday where all the other students from other courses are chillin’ at their crib. While us nursing students are toiling and moving our butts taking care of patients in the hospital. I bet we’ll still have duty when the world ends. Well, going back, these athlete students are so into their respective sports that they will do everything to practice and play for the upcoming Intramurals. They will practice after their assessment (the day before the actual duty when we go to the hospital to assess our patients before taking care of them the next day) , they will practice on Sundays where it will most likely be our rest day or the only day when we can study, they will practice after duty, they will practice anytime and are willing to sacrifice their time studying , just to have a play. Lastly, when the intramural day comes, and the schedule of their game is on the same day as their duty, “YOLO”! They will choose to play rather than saving lives -“LOL i’m just kidding, hahaha! I understand these athletes, because i myself was a soccer player during my student days”. I’d rather have extension rather than not playing! “So we can”t stooop …🎶🎶

13.) The potential Topnotcher

These are the smart people. It is either the ones that are smart, and let’s you copy on the exam, or the smart, but doesn’t let you copy. They eat books as their breakfast, snacks the NANDA book, drinks the Pharmacology book, sips the Medical Surgical book for lunch, and studies even when commuting on the way to school.

14.) The YOLO

You only Live once!” These are the nursing students who love to bar hop or drink with friends from nursing or other courses. They do this maybe M-W-F basis, everyday, or whenever they feel to! “Quiz tomorrow?” YOLO. “Duty tomorrow?YOLO. That’s there life! Usually after the night’s drink, they get hangover the next day. They usually go to school wearing sunglasses to hide there sleepy red eyes. Is that you? I bet you have exam or quiz tomorrow and you came across reading this article in the internet – well you better study now. YOLO?

15.) The InstaPips

These are the nursing students who loves to take pictures and selfies on there phone. They take pictures in the canteen of the hospital. They take selfies EVERY after the end of the rotation. They take selfies of their new stethoscope – with the emphasis of “Litman”. They take selfies of the babies on the OB or Delivery room, the placenta, umbilical cord, blood, poop, poop (okay enough). They take selfies of everything! They usually have Iphones i guess? You better upgrade to a 128Gigabyte with all the pictures you have, you need a lot more space to store those files.

16.) The UNLI

These are the students, who are assigned to group message each and everyone in the class. Without these persons, everyone would have no assignment, won’t know the exam schedules, or some simple announcements. They are in-charge of posting announcements and schedules on facebook! These students are necessities in our Nursing life! On the other hand, being like this person is a pain in the ass sometimes! Your classmate tends to ask everything to you, As if the clinical instructor was your mother! In the end, they will help us a lot ! Especially whenever you wake up in the morning and you will receive a text message from them that says “ANNOUNCEMENT: no class today!”

There are a lot more i guess, but these are the notable ones. Nursing is really a difficult and tiring course. You need to put a great deal of energy towards everything. That is why when the time comes and you passed the licensure exam and get your license as a Registered Nurse, there will surely be a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction especially the NCLEX.
